my daughter has been taking taekwondo from Jason Yi's Lorton facility for 10 months. The instruction is outstanding, but more importantly they are teaching her invaluable lessons in self esteem, honor, pride and respect. Wonderful job, a time well spent.
More
The story of Tae Kwon Do is inextricably linked to the history of Korea. Find out more about the nation’s past to learn the roots of its national sport.
Ancient Inspiration:
In the 6th Century, the borders of Korea looked significantly different than they do today. Control of the peninsula was split between three rival states:
The Koguryo kingdom stretched from North Korea’s present border with China to the bottom of the peninsula.
In the South, the Paekje and Silla kingdoms buffeted for control and independence.
In the midst of this violent period, Silla King Chin Heung employed the talents of Buddhist monk Won Kang to improve the training of his elite Hwa Rang warriors. They practiced a basic system of foot strikes called Soo Bak. Won Kangempowered the martial arts system by incorporating the foundations of Tae Kwon Do’s philosophy.
Decline and Rebirth:
In the late 14th century, the powerful Koguryo dynasty fell to rebellion. In its place, the Choson dynasty ruled the Korean peninsula for over half a century. Following the nation’s transition from Buddhism to Confucianism, Soo Bak and other Korean martial arts lost much of their cultural relevance. In order to preserve Korea’s national techniques, King Jeongjo commissioned combat manuals in the late 1700s. Despite the successful drafting of these manuals, the techniques remained out of sight until Japanese occupation in 1910. During this period, all practice of martial arts was banned.
Modern Unification:
Following Korean’s independence in 1945, the leaders of several martial art schools (Kwans) endeavored to unite their fractured traditions. By 1955, historians and martial artist met to collect and unify their teachings. The Korean Tae Kwon Do Association, the ruling body of modern schools, was founded in 1962 as the Korean Tae Kwon Do Union.
